I found out about this manga very recently when I saw that it is getting an anime next year. The title sounded interesting so I dived into it. And I have to say, Yamada-Kun is a pretty good rom-com. All of the initial skepticism I had about this series was completely gone after the first few chapters. And the series really gets juicy down the line.
Welcome back to another edition of our manga recommendation series! This week we are talking about Yamada-Kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru. Of course, I won’t be using that full title all the time. There is quite a bit to talk about here so let’s get started right away.
Introduction
Yamada-Kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru is written and illustrated by Mashiro. The manga started its serialization in the Ganma magazine on 7th March 2019 and is still ongoing. As for the anime, it will be coming out next year. And the anime is being made by Madhouse of all studios. It has quite a few good names behind it so it should be a fun anime to watch. I am looking forward to it.
Yamada-Kun is a pretty unconventional rom-com. I personally like the author tackle’s the difference in the personality of the MC duo. They have completely different personalities yet they share similar interests and they clearly like each other. It makes for a very interesting dynamic. More on that later though, for now…
Plot
Our female MC, Akane’s boyfriend cheats on her with a girl he met in an online game. So as Akane is venting her frustration in the game, she meets our Yamada-Kun who’s her guild-mate and he is max level. Slowly but surely, while playing the game both of them grow closer. Soon they have a thing for each other and eventually start dating.
So Yamada-Kun does a great job of showcasing a relationship between two completely different kinds of people. Kaguya-sama may have perfected the formula of “slow romance” but this manga is pretty good as well. The deliberate slow pacing makes for some great moments and it feels good when certain things finally happen.
Characters
Both the lead characters of Yamada-Kun are awesome. It is very fun to see them interact and it is their unique dynamic that sets this manga apart from others. It is really satisfying to see Akito and Akane hang out together despite their differences in personality and schedule. They genuinely like each other and in the later parts of the manga, their relationship becomes even better. It won’t be far off to say that Akito and Akane’s relationship is solo-carrying the series.
Art
Yamada-Kun has pretty decent art. I really like it because it fits the vibe of the manga. It is pretty bright and has some great character designs. The art has quite a lot more details than it seems. The hair, for example, it’s pretty satisfying for me the way Mashiro draws hair. All in all, I really like the art in this manga.
Why should you read Yamada-Kun?
Quick pointers on why you should check out this manga:
- Interesting setting
- Great characters
- Really entertaining
- Awesome art
Conclusion
That is all for now. Yamada-Kun is a surprisingly good manga. It has no right being as good as it is. Well, let me know what you guys think in the comments. With that said, I will take my leave here. My eyes are really heavy, it’s rather late in the night here right now. See ya!!
