2022 was a year packed with awesome releases. In particular, Spring and Fall seasons were filled to the brim with hyped shows. I don’t think I’ve seen a season busier than Spring 2022, although Winter 2023 does come close to it. I am watching 12 animes this season if you’re curious. So I don’t blame you if you missed some animes. I’m the Villainess So I am Taming the Last Boss came out in the fall season and of course, it got overshadowed by a lot of other releases. So I am just highlighting it today cause I think it deserves some more love.
So welcome back to a random article highlighting an anime from last year. If this article does well, I may even continue this “Underrated anime” series and highlight some more anime, not just from last year. So let’s talk about I’m the Villainess so I am Taming the Last Boss today!
Plot
The anime starts off simple. You know, typical Otome Game isekai stuff. Our protagonist, the “villainess” is rejected by the prince for a commoner girl. What’s different here is that instead of accepting her defeat, Aileen decides to marry the “last boss” of the game, the Demon King who also happens to be the prince’s brother.
It’d be a normal Otome Game isekai if things moved on like that. But no, things get really complex down the line I’m the Villainess so I am Taming the Last Boss. A lot of political and underground stuff is explored in this anime. The plot is actually really solid and stays interesting even after the wedding is done. And there’s a really big plot twist in this anime too which I won’t reveal. This anime is like a combination between HameFura and The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs. And I love that.
Characters
I’m The Villainess so I am Taming the Last Boss also has decent characters. Aileen’s character in particular is really well brought out. At first, she goes to the Demon King on a whim but, eventually falls in love with him for real. She gets along well with his subordinates and helps them all to the best of her ability. Aileen’s friends are really well written too and the prince and his girl make for some good antagonists.
Animations and Soundtracks
Now the animations can definitely be better. I love the art style and character designs, but the animations definitely could use a little bit more budget and time. They’re not bad, it is just that they feel very flat. The soundtracks are pretty decent, the opening theme is performed by Takahashi Rie herself I believe which is pretty cool.
