Tokyo Ghoul is one of the best manga ever. The anime could have been a lot better but it kinda died in the later seasons. I still love the manga though. It is a very beginner-friendly anime. It is the first or one of the first anime of a lot of people including me.
This is my first list of “Anime like x” styles. So I will do my best to put up recommendations that are similar to Tokyo Ghoul. I know a lot of people search for recommendations in this way so of course, I would do a list like this. Let me clarify this first though, the anime is ranked on their similarities to Tokyo Ghoul and not how good they are. So without any further ado, let us get started.
Blue Exorcist
Blue Exorcist is about Okumura Rin who is a half-demon. Rin trains to become an exorcist and fight demons not wanting to join his father. It shares the dark themes of Tokyo Ghoul. There is also the fact that Rin and Kaneki are both halves of humans and another race.
Blue Exorcist is a really good anime. sadly, it is so short. I would have loved to see a sequel of Blue Exorcist. It has many similarities to Tokyo Ghoul. So if you liked Tokyo Ghoul, there is a very good chance you will like Blue Exorcist. It is 24 episodes so you should have no trouble watching it.
Another
Moving on to the next entry, we have Another. One of the rare anime that is actually somewhat scary. It shares dark themes (this once it is Supernatural instead of Action genre though), horror, and the all blood with Tokyo Ghoul. Have watched the Final Destination movies? Yeah, Anotheris just an anime version of those movies.
Another is another really good anime. It short and…. Well, not so sweet at 12 episodes. Fair warnings, a lot of characters die in the anime. Yes, the main characters included (not the protagonist) so if don’t like to see the main character die, do not watch this.
Attack on Titan
I watched Attack on Titan alongside Tokyo Ghoul. They were my 3rd and 4th anime respectively. So I may be a bit biased here but I really think AoT and Tokyo Ghoul are really similar. There’s all the bloodshed, dark themes, and this once the protagonists share the psychological trauma too.
Even if you are new to anime, I am pretty sure you have at least heard AoT’s name. You should definitely check it out. Its last season should come by the end of this year or early next year. Catch up to it before that so that we may enjoy the finale together.
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Speaking of psychological trauma, we have really deep psychological trauma. If you want depression, NGE is something you should check out. It is not as violent as Tokyo Ghoul but, it will give you far greater psychological trauma. Shinji did not suffer as much as Kaneki but, his character is much more relatable since Shinji’s troubles are something many may have experienced. Except for all the fate of the world thing of course.
NGE is worth all the depression it will give you. It appears to be a normal mecha anime at first but turns batshit crazy real soon. There hasn’t been anything like NGE since. You should definitely check it out and I am warning you beforehand, it will take multiple rewatches to understand the story properly. It is just 25 episodes and 1 movie. It is amazing how they managed to create such a masterpiece in just 25 episodes.
Parasyte
This is the most similar anime to Tokyo Ghoul I have ever watched. It is like Tokyo Ghoul in multiple aspects. The fights, the plot progression, and even the character development of Kaneki and Izumi are really similar. All the things they go through are really painful and both Kaneki and Izumi go through similar experiences.
While being similar, they are really different. They have their own identities and Parasyte is much older than Tokyo Ghoul to be a rip-off. Parasyte’s plot has aged really well. I don’t know if people liked the manga back when it was released but the anime is just amazing. It is just 25 episodes; you will absolutely love this if you liked Tokyo Ghoul.
