This is a pretty busy season. Yes, we don’t have that many big-name animes aside from Vinland Saga and NieR (which got delayed) but we do have a lot of good new anime. And one anime that has constantly been popping up on my recommendations is this. Tomo-chan Is a Girl is a rather interesting take on a rom-com. And I can completely understand why people like it so much.
So welcome to this weird blend between a “first impressions” article and a mid-season review. Today we are talking about Tomo-chan Is a Girl. This anime had been recommended a lot this season, so I finally gave in and checked it out. I need something to fill in the space left by the postponement of NieR and Kubo-san after all. I will treat this article as a regular first impressions article. With that said, let’s start right away.
What do I Think of Tomo-chan Is a Girl so far?
Man, first of all, the premise itself is so entertaining. A girl wants to date a guy but, the guy doesn’t see her as a girl at all. They are “buddies” literally best friends for life kind of deal. They’ve been together since their childhood and both of them have a proper man-to-man friendship. so I can kind of understand why Jun doesn’t see Tomo as a romantic interest.
Is it completely true though? I don’t know! Cause Jun at times actually does treat Tomo like a girl. Like that time in episode 2 where he helped with that creep on the bus. His reaction/remark after that does indicate that there is aย hintย of romantic feelings in him as well. So it is a pretty interesting dynamic between Jun and Tomo and the whole anime rides on this dynamic. And then we have our wild card, the 3rd childhood friend, Gundou. She loves to throw a bone in their relationship and tease them. This plus a whole plethora of side characters makes this anime good.
Tomo-chan Is a Girl is hard carried by its interesting character dynamics but the premise is pretty entertaining as well. The art style is quite nice but the animations are fairly average. Well, not like it matters much in a rom-com but still. I liked the opening theme quite a bit too. Quite an entertaining anime for sure, can’t wait to see how the character development progresses with the story.
Conclusion
As things stand right now, Tomo-chan Is a Girl gets a solid 8/10 from me. The character writing, their dynamics, and the premise make this anime a joy to watch. Of course, this is based on only 4 episodes and may change in the future. I look forward to seeing more of this anime for sure, it is really fun to watch.
Well, those were my thoughts on Tomo-chan Is a Girl. Let me know what you think in the comments below. With that said, I will take my leave here. I am a bit behind schedule. See ya!!
