Key takeaways from my review of The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten:
- My thoughts and opinions on this anime
- To help you decide if this anime is for you or not
This anime is proof of the fact that a plain and simple romance anime without any needless drama and stuff can still work. And it works really well. The Angel Next Door is by no means anything new but, it is so good that can’t help but smile whenever you are watching it. No fan service, no needless tension, just wholesome romance that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
So welcome back to another one of my reviews. Today I am talking about The Angel Next Door Spoils me Rotten. I absolutely loved this anime, it is one of the best rom-coms in recent memory. Maybe even be my 2nd favorite rom-com after Kaguya-sama at this point. That already gives you a picture of how this review will go. So let’s get started anyway.
Plot
The plot is pretty straightforward. Our MC lives next door to the most “famous” girl in his school. One day he sees her sitting in a park out in the rain so he gives his umbrella to her and runs off. He catches a cold because of it and she helps him recover as a means of paying him back. This is how their unexpected friendship starts and slowly develops into something more.
Once again, the plot is nothing out of the ordinary. What it all boils down to is the execution. The pacing of how Amane and Mahiru’s relationship grows and how more people come to know about it really well done. This ties really well into Amane’s character development. This execution is what makes The Angel Next Door special.
Characters
Amane is a really good MC. He is by far one of the most relatable rom-com MCs for me. He clearly like Mahiru but he thinks that he is unworthy of her and does not want to destroy their existing relationship. His character development thanks to Mahiru is really good. Now, Mahiru herself may appear to be the usual “perfect girl” type but, the series does a great job of showing that she is still normal. And she does not really like it when people put her up on this pedestal. Then of course we have Itsuki and Chitose to push them close.
Oh and before I move on, quick shout out to Yuta. I didn’t really like him at first but, he’s a pretty chill guy. The characters in this anime are really good. I love how they went with the quality-over-quantity approach. We get a little bit of background about each character, even if they are side characters like Itsuki and Chitose. Amane and Mahiru of course, get way more than that.
Animations and Soundtracks
The animations are pretty average. Again, a rom-com doesn’t really need big-budget animations so I am not complaining. The art style though is pretty pleasing to the eyes. I love the soft color palette of this anime’s art style. The soundtracks are pretty decent too, I really liked both the opening and ending themes.
Conclusion
Here are my final scores for The Angel Next Door Spoils me Rotten:
- Plot – 8/10
- Characters – 9/10
- Animations – 8/10
- Soundtracks – 7/10
- Enjoyment – 10/10
- No BS rom-com – 10/10
- Overall – 9/10
