Key takeaways from Anime Recommendation – Terror in Resonance
- “Terror in Resonance” is an original anime by Mappa, known for its suspenseful plot and psychological elements.
- The series follows two teenagers called “Sphinx” who claim responsibility for a nuclear power plant attack and challenge the police with cryptic clues.
- With well-written characters, impressive animation, and compelling backstories, “Terror in Resonance” offers an overlooked yet captivating viewing experience.
Before Mappa was a household name thanks to Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaise, they were still making bangers. Yes, none of them were as big as AoT, Jujutsu Kaisen, or Vinland Saga but there was some amazing stuff here. Among them are anime like Kids on the Slope, Banana Fish, or this anime right here.
Terrot in Resonance is Mappa’s first original anime if I remember correctly and their first breakout hit. Kids on the Slope was amazing but I did not reach the same popularity as this.
So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series. This week we are talking about Terror in Resonance. Let’s get started right away,
Introduction
Terror in Resonance or Zankyou no Terror is an original anime by Mappa. Meaning, it has no source material, it was made in the studio from scratch. It is just 11 episodes long and came out back in the summer season of 2014. This anime is suspense-mystery anime with a hint of psychology. It has a really good plot with some amazing character work. Not much else to say here. So let’s move on to
Plot
There was an unknown attack on a nuclear power plant in Japan and the government is unable to do anything. 6 months later, a couple of teenagers calling themselves ‘Sphinx’ appear online, claiming responsibility for the attack. And they challenge the police with similar attacks in the future while dropping cryptic clues on their targets. One detective catches onto their riddles and tries to do everything to stop them.
I will not tell you why Nine and Twelve did what they did because that is a huge spoiler. But the story is really well written. The way Nine and Twelve drop the info, how the detective convinces his seniors to help him, and how they eventually clash are really well done. The ending was a bit divisive back in the day but in my opinion, it was perfect for what the series was trying to convey.
Characters
Nine and Twelve are really well-written characters. Their backstory really defines their motivations and actions well. Twelve in particular receives some really nice character development thanks to Lisa. While Lisa is mostly someone like an observer between Nine and Twelve, she does help Twelve’s character development. The detective, Shibazaki is really well-written character too.
Animations and Soundtracks
Even before Mappa was famous, they were making some really good animations. Terror in Resonance is no exception. The art style is really good, I love the detailed expressions they have on every character. Adds so much more emotion to heavy scenes. The soundtracks are pretty good too. The opening theme is kind of haunting, which fits the series really well.
Why should you watch Terror in Resonance?
Quick pointers on why you should check out this anime:
- Awesome plot

Conclusion
That is all for now. Let me know what you think in the comments. Terror in Resonance is really overlooked anime in my opinion and more people should watch it. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!!
