Good ol’ Studio Ghibli, just how many masterpieces have these guys given us over the years? Their movies are proof that wholesome family-friendly entertainment is always welcome. Yes, I know their modern movies have been hit or miss for the most part. But, that does not change the fact that we have countless memories attached to this studio. We can never forget movies like Mononoke Hime, Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle, etc.
So when I heard that they are back with another new movie, I could not help but be excited. Studio Ghibli is back after so many years, even the movie I am going to discuss today was announced 5 years ago I think. So there is a lot to be said here and we do have a good chunk of news, so let’s get started. I’ll get to my thoughts on it after the news.
What do we know about the movie?
The official website of Studio Ghibli announced on Tuesday (13th December) that Hayao Miyazaki is returning to lead the work on the movie Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru Ka. Of course, Miyazaki will be handling the direction and the screenplay of the movie as always. The movie is based on an SOL novel of the same name by Genzaburou Yoshino. The novel was published all the way back in 1937.
The work on Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru Ka began all the way back in 2016 and now, it is finally confirmed to release on 14th July 2023. Of course, that is the Japanese release date. The global release schedule will vary depending on what country you live in. I don’t believe we have any teaser PVs/trailers for the movie yet but we did get a teaser visual of course that I used as the thumbnail for this article. So let’s move on to
My Thoughts on the project so far
There are 2 Japanese directors I absolutely love and both of them have the same last name: Miyazaki. One is Hidetaka Miyazaki of From Software, known for his work on the Dark Souls series and Elden Ring. And the other one is, of course, Hayao Miyazaki. I am so happy to see him return to make a movie. I didn’t think he’d make another movie after that announcement in 2013 but here we are. Him being back is a good sign for sure.
That said though, I have a few concerns. Modern Studio Ghibli movies are hardly what they once were. This movie apparently took 5-6 years to be completed… so that could either be really good or really bad. I’d like to be optimistic though, it’d be really good if Studio Ghibli comes back with a complete haymaker of a movie. Wouldn’t that make for a good comeback story?
Conclusion
Well, that is all for now. I do look forward to this movie just because it is Miyazaki-san doing it. Let me know what you guys think in the comments though, I will take my leave here. I have to do research for more articles and exams are coming soon too. So, see ya!
