So I reviewed Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita and said that anime was one of my 2 disappointments from this season. Shinobi no Ittoki is the 2nd disappointment. This anime too started out pretty good but as the episodes went on, the plot got worse and worse. I don’t even look forward to the ending at this point. I will still watch it though.
So welcome back to another one of my reviews, let’s talk about Shinobi no Ittoki today. Yes, the review is a bit early since episode 12 isn’t out yet but I doubt the ending will be anything different than I expect. So let’s get into it… oh boy, this won’t be pretty.
Plot
Shinobi no Ittoki has a pretty cool concept about Ninjas in the modern day, using current technology and stuff for their missions and stuff. It also tried to reimagine the age-old Koga/Iga rivalry in modern times. All that sound like a great setup for an anime right? But, unfortunately, the execution of the story is pretty poor.
A lot of things absolutely do not make sense in this anime. Like why would you send your own son to a ninja academy knowing full well that there have already been attempts at his life? He is not particularly safe at the academy, why wouldn’t you just train him at home? Why doesn’t anyone ever explain anythingย about those high-tech ninja suits to the poor sod? Why doesn’t anyone train him? This combined with the predictable plot twists makes for a very middle-of-the-road experience. I was hoping it’d get explained at some point but that seems less and less likely with each episode.
Characters
This is another area where Shinobi no Ittoki falls flat again. Kousetsu is probably the only well-done character, her backstory is pretty well-written and I do like her. Ittoki though… God, imagine a more monotonous and incompetent version of Shirou from F/SN. I thought he’d get character development over time but no, he just got more annoying. I do feel bad for him though because the people around him are uncooperative and probably want him to die.
Animations and Soundtracks
Now, this is one part where Shinobi no Ittoki doesn’t fall flat. The animations and art direction are actually pretty good. The suits and stuff and the action sequences look pretty rad. And the sound design is pretty decent too. The opening and ending themes are quite good as well. So I don’t really have many complaints in this regard.
Conclusion
Well, here are my final ratings for Shinobi no Ittoki:
- Plot – 5/10
- Characters – 6/10
- Animations – 7/10
- Soundtracks – 7/10
- Enjoyment – 5/10
- Potential – 10/10
- Overall – 5/10
Well, that about does it for now. Keep in mind, these are all my personal opinions so feel free to disagree with me in the comments. As I said, I don’t like giving bad reviews but this anime had so much potential to be good. And it really saddens me when anime with good potential waste all of it with a badly executed story. With that said though, I will take my leave here. I have to study, exam season is soon. See ya!
