Key takeaways from Best Episodes of the Week – Summer 2023 Week 9:
- Mushoku Tensei had a big revelation that will have a lot of future relevance.
- My Happy Marriage continues to impress with its awesome plot
- Bungou Stray Dogs had another strong episode with plot becoming more chaotic
- Jujutsu Kaisen finally introduced us to the Shibuya Arc
- Horimiya Piece had one of the best episodes of the season so far
Looking back, it doesn’t even feel like it has been 9 weeks since the summer season started. We’re a good 3 quarters through most anime in the season. And I have to say it’s been a lot of fun doing this series every week. And this week was no different. Jujutsu Kaisen is finally back after a break of 2-3 weeks. And the Shibuya Arc is finally underway.
I really do miss Bleach, as it didn’t have a new episode this week. But I’m sure next week’s episode will be a banger. Still, though, we had an awesome episode in Mushoku Tensei as well. This episode will have far-reaching consequences. Bungou and My Happy Marriage delivering every single week too.
So, lots of stuff to talk about as usual. Join me as I discuss my favorite episodes of the week, everything from the Shibuya Arc introduction to the insane reveal in Mushoku Tensei. Let’s talk about it all.
Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 9
Special spoiler warning for this one. Please read only after watching the episode.
Bloody good episode this one. Right off the bat, we get a big reveal, you know the confirmation that Fitz is indeed Sylphie. It has been hinted at throughout the arc but was explicitly confirmed in this episode. Then after that, there was the whole sequence with Nanhoshi and all the bombshells that the whole scene dropped. First, she’s someone who got ‘teleported’ into that world. She was not reincarnated like Rudy.
The intense PTSD Rudy had the moment he saw her was really well done. Literally dying would be enough to give anyone PTSD. She then goes on to reveal a bunch of stuff about the teleportation incident and why she thinks it happened. This causes Sylphie to attack her because of how much she lost during the whole thing. It was an awesome episode, with lots of lore, lots of emotion, and good plot progression. Even considering the Shibuya Arc intro, this is probably the best episode of the week.
My Happy Marriage Episode 9
This anime gets better every week. I thought no more new twists this week but, turns out I was wrong. And the series loves leaving us on cliffhangers and this episode did just that once again. Miyo and Kiyoka kind of grew distant since Kiyoka had been really busy ever since the Grave was opened. Miyo’s nightmares are apparently getting worse and she eventually collapses. She is saved by the Tsurumi guy… I am sure he’s a nobody.
Well, turns out he’s involved with the Usuba and even tried to widen the divide between Miyo and Kiyoka. Yeah, fun. The episode ends with Kiyoka driving Miyo to Tsurumi so that he may get some answers out of him. Curious to see what happens in next week’s episode.
Bungou Stray Dogs Season 5 Episode 9
Why do the episodes feel so short? I said in a recent article that the moment you see even a sliver of hope for the Agency, the anime takes it away. That is pretty much what happened this week as well. You thought Atsushi would be able to convince the Hunting Dogs to help, but that didn’t happen. You thought Kenji would go on a rampage and own everyone, that didn’t happen. Even the ending of the episode left me saying “Please stop, no more T_T”.
At least Dazai pulled kind of a W over Fyodor and Chuuya. So at least that counts. Poor Agency though, has been taking continuous Ls these days. Dazai please come back, they need you. Jokes aside, I really do wonder what is going on. We see a flash of Atsushi lying on a bed with Dazai’s voice calling him in the episode. So I wonder what all that is about. Another banger episode from the season though.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 6
Yes, the anime is finally back with a bang, And it is Shibuya Arc time indeed, Even the new opening makes that clear. When they put the name of an arc in the opening, you know that the arc is a big deal. Quick note on the new opening theme, I like it. It is not as good as the very first one but probably my 2nd favorite opening theme now. The first half of the episode was relatively chill but the 2nd part is where things really begin.
We learn that there is a mole in the Kyoto school and by process of elimination, it is determined to be Mechamaru. Now while he was indeed a mole, my guy just wanted to use Mahito to get his skin and body back, Once he got that, he immediately turned on Mahito and Sugiru. He planned on stalling them till Gojo came around but that may be difficult. The episode ends just as Mechamaru charges a big blast. The second half of the episode did an excellent job kickstarting the Shibuya Arc’s plot, while the first half delivered some hilarious comedy.
Horimiya Piece Episode 10
Let’s keep this one short as I am running short on the word limit here. But yeah, Horimiya Piece is back with another fun episode. The season mostly spent time away from the main couple but this episode featured them in all their ridiculous glory. Horimiya shenanigans are back and they’re just as ridiculous, hilarious, and borderline non-sensical as the last time.
I said episode 9 was probably the funniest episode of the season, nah, episode 10 definitely passed it. CloverWorks going all in on those meme faces too just to add to the comedy of the scene. Others comment on how weird Hori and Miyamura’s relationship is, yeah, it was great.
Conclusion
That is all for now. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. This was another awesome week of the Summer 2023 season, 3 more weeks to go, so let’s see how things wrap up. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!!
Also, a 3rd season of Kimi ni Todoke was just announced! Check out the details here!
