So like most others, I too discovered this anime because of the YouTube compilations and the memes. A bit old at this point but still fun as hell to watch and revisit. Sakamoto Desu ga is a weirdly wholesome comedy anime with a rather emotional ending if you understand it. I believe it has something for everyone. And it is something everyone can enjoy.
So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series! This week we are talking about the infinitely memeable, Sakamoto Desu ga. If you haven’t watched this, go watch it now and if you have, you know how this anime goes. So well, let’s start right away!
Introduction
Sakamoto Desu ga is based on the manga of the same name by Sano Nami. The anime is 12 episodes long and is made by Studio Deen. It came out back in the spring season of 2016. As you may have guessed, it is a high-school comedy and has a really really good ending. This is one of those animes where you just put your brain to rest and enjoy it.
Plot
Look, I ain’t gonna sugar coat it, Sakamoto is a literal god. I wish I was joking but no, it is true. The first day of school, every girl falls for him at the first sight. The guys are jealous of him at first but then they become really good buddies with him. I am not sure how I even describe this anime’s plot further.
It is literally an SOL anime showing off the magnificence of the god in the flesh, Sakamoto. But the plot doesn’t matter. What makes this anime good are the characters. Be it, Sakamoto, himself, or all the others that learn from him. Before moving on to that though, the series is actually pretty deep. It is more than just impossible and goofy set pieces, the last few episodes especially make you look inside yourself.
Characters
Sakamoto is perfect, right? This much is made clear again and again throughout the plot. That is why I referred to him as a god. So how do you use this kind of character to tell a story? Well, you use them as a plot device to develop other characters. That is exactly what this anime does. That is the point of this anime. Sakamoto helps everyone learn and grow, they may never reach his level of magnificence, but they sure do learn a lot by following him. All the more reason why the ending realization hits you hard.
Animations and Soundtracks
Sakamoto Desu ga is an SOL for the most part so the animations aren’t too crazy or anything. Both the animations and the art style are pretty average. I do commend the direction though, they gave us a lot of memes in this anime. As for the soundtracks, the BGMs are ok, and the opening theme is pretty good but I don’t really remember the ending theme that much.
Why should you watch Sakamoto Desu ga?
Quick pointers on why you should check out this anime:
- Surprisingly deep story
- Really funny
- Great characters
- Sakamoto (yes, he’s the biggest reason to check out the show)
