Ah Mushoku Tensei, the series that always does something questionable every other episode is involved in another controversy. The show has been the topic of debate among the community for a while now, so why is it different this time? Well, Episode 6 of Mushoku Tensei Season 2 had some stuff to do with slavery and many people didn’t like Rudeus’s reaction to it.
The author of the series comments on every episode as they air. However, his comment for episode 6 only seemed to further complicate the matter. Additionally, many Reddit threads discussing the episode banned any mention of slavery. This didn’t help either.
People may apply their moral compass to fictional settings and characters, leading to misunderstandings. In this case, in particular, many details were lost in translation. Please listen to my explanation before forming an opinion. I am just here to provide some more context. So let’s talk about Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 6 today.
About Rudeus
Let’s start with the crux of the issue. The thing with Rudeus is that he is not your typical MC. I wouldn’t even describe him as a “good person”. He is someone who completely wasted his last life and not is struggling to hold together his current life. He has some good qualities and some bad. Given his previous life, I think it is fair to say that he is not the most morally correct person out there.
The Mushoku Tensei community will defend him to death, but you can accept the fact that he is a little shit and still enjoy the show. In fact, I’d say him getting better over time is the point of the show.
Lost in Translation

The author tweeted this along with the episode. The Tweet basically translates to Rudeus being indifferent to slavery and does not want to interfere in a culture he does not understand. Even if he was able to free slaves from this one establishment, it won’t affect slavery on a grand scale. That is basically what I got from the tweet. His sentiments about slavery were depicted better in the LN as the anime cut out his monolog and the conversation with Fitz before that was much longer as well.
I don’t know if the anime will cover that part or not, but Julie’s parents are technically having better lives as slaves than before. They kept making bad investments, went broke, and eventually had to sell themselves to slavery. This is an event that influences Rudeus too. Another example of loss of translation. In a follow-up Tweet, the author clarified that theyย do not condone slavery, they were just talking about Rudeus’s views on slavery as a character.

Conclusion
That does it for now. I think I have presented all the context I needed to. I knew that Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 6 would draw some controversy but I didn’t expect it to be as big as it has gotten online. For me ultimately, it does not change much for the series. If anything, it is an insight into how messed up Rudy’s meals are at this point. I know not everyone will like it, I admit this series is not for everyone either and that is totally fine.
