Muse Asia recently started streaming this anime on their channel, so this is a very good opportunity to talk about it. Mob Psycho 100 often gets overlooked when compared to the author’s other work, One Punch Man. It may not be as widely appealing as OPM but, it is still a beautiful anime. The season 2 ending is still etched into my memory.
So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series! This week we are talking about Mob Psycho 100. A truly heart-touching tale with all the quirkiness you’d expect from ONE. I love this anime. Let’s get right into it.
Introduction
Mob Psycho 100 is based on the manga of the same name by ONE. Yes, the same author as One Punch Man. The manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s Ura Sunday from April 2012 to December 2017. As for the anime, it has 2 seasons of 12 episodes each made by Studio Bones. A third season is set to air next month, more specifically from October 6th.
Mob Psycho 100 for me found a great balance between emotional stuff and some awesome fights. The emotional side of things though is way more alluring to me than the fights. Mob’s character development is what fuels the series and it is a pure joy to watch. Mob is a really well-thought-out character.
Plot
Mob Psycho 100 follows a normal high-school student, Shigeo Kageyama or “Mob”. Despite his average looks and lack of presence, he has some crazy psychic powers. To prevent his powers from going out of control, he basically has suppressed his emotions. To learn how to control his powers, he works under a guy called Reigen. Mob just wants to lead a normal life but shit keeps happening.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, works like Mob Psycho 100, Chainsaw Man, Fumetsu no Anata e, etc. that remind us how precious “normal” life is. The plot here is just meant to facilitate Mob’s character development. The plot is basically about Mob slowly uncovering his suppressed emotions and growing as a person. And it is beautiful.
Characters
Mob Psycho 100 has a wide array of characters. ONE is really good at writing characters and it is very apparent here. I’ve talked about Mob plenty so, I want to highlight Reigen for a bit. You know that he is a scam right from episode 1 yet still somehow, it is very hard to hate that guy. Especially once you see the season 2 ending, you just can’t bring yourself to hate him. ONE is very good at pulling off things like these and Reigen is one of the best examples of his character writing.
Animations and Soundtracks
Mob Psycho 100 has a very quirky art style, very typical of ONE. The art style is very unique and Bones did a fine job of putting it into the anime. The fights are extremely well directed, they look amazing and are very well animated. The soundtracks are equally good as well, some of the BGMs really do bring tears to my eyes. Bones really did a fantastic job on this anime.
Why should you watch Mob Psycho 100?
Quick pointers on why you should check out this anime:
