So let’s finally talk about this manga. I mean even if you’ve not read it, you know about this manga. It was pretty popular already but, ever since Mappa announced an anime for it everyone knows about it. Even I read this manga after it blew up in popularity. It deserves every bit of praise it gets. Chainsaw Man may not be for everyone but, it is one hell of a ride for those who can stomach it.
So welcome back to another edition of our manga recommendation series. This week we are taking a look at the insanely popular Chainsaw Man. There is a lot to talk about this week, so let’s get started right away.
Introduction
Chainsaw Man is written and illustrated by Fujimoto Tatsuki. It was serialized from 3rd December 2018 to 14th December 2020 in the Shounen Jump. CSM is 11 volumes or 87 chapters long, which isn’t long at all. It also has an anime adaptation under work by the famous studio Mappa. The anime should come out late this year or early next year.
Chainsaw Man is very comparable to Tokyo Ghoul in terms of the themes and the vibe. So if you liked Tokyo Ghoul, you’ll most probably like this too. The series has a lot of gore and dark themes so, consider yourself warned if you can’t stomach stuff like that.
Plot
Chainsaw Man follows Denji, a seemingly normal guy who just wants to live a peaceful life. He is forced to work for the Yakuza to pay off his debts and when he outlives his usefulness, he is killed by them. His pet devil merges with him, bringing him back to life and giving him the powers of the chainsaw devil. Denji uses his new power to dispatch his foes and then is later invited to join the Safety Bureau as an official devil hunter.
Chainsaw Man is very different from a normal shounen anime. It pursues and highlights a lot of dark themes. The plot is in the gray area most of the time. Aside from that, the plot is beautifully paced and there are more than plenty of plot twists.
Characters
Chainsaw Man has some really good characters. Denji is definitely one of my favorite MCs of all time. Poor guy just wants to live a normal life but he is denied his wish over and over again. CSM really reminds you of the value of your own life. Denji grows significantly throughout the series. He goes from a simpleton to a toughened man. There are some other really good characters too like Makima and Power. Makima is a truly detestable character and that is a testament to how well she is written.
Art
Chainsaw Man has some really good art. The art is dark and sharp looking and that complements the story really well. The fights are really well done, they are bloody and violent as hell. That is one of the appeals of the series to me, no holding back on any of the sensitive stuff. Also, let me say this again, Chainsaw Man has a lot of gore and profanity. So stay away from the series if you are sensitive to those.
Why should you read Chainsaw Man?
Some quick pointers on why you should read this manga:
- Great plot
- Awesome pacing
- Great characters
- Great fights
Conclusion
That is all for now. Chainsaw Man is an awesome manga and it deserves all the praise. If you haven’t read it already, go check it out if you can take it. It is rather short too, so shouldn’t take long to finish. With that said though, I will take my leave here. See ya!
