While we wait for a sequel to the anime, I decided to go and check out the manga just for fun. And low and behold, I am finished with it before I even realized it. I literally have one word to describe Kakegurui: Wild. That is what this series is. Imagine if NGNL was set in a school and had Food Wars style fan-service. Yeah, that is basically this manga
So welcome back to another edition of our manga recommendation series. This week we will be talking about Kakegurui. I recently caught up to the manga out of curiosity and man, it did not disappoint. let’s take a look at it today.
Introduction
Kakegurui is written by Kawamoto Homura and illustrated by Naomura Tooru. It started serialization in March 2014 and is still ongoing in the Gangan Joker Magazine. It also has 2 seasons of anime adaptation by none other than Mappa; although the manga obviously goes further than what the anime has covered. We do have an upcoming spin-off anime so hopefully, we will get season 3 sometime in the future too.
Plot
Hyakkaou Private Academy values the ability to read people above everything else. And as such, the school works on a No Game No Life type system where students gamble in dens overseen by the student council, betting rank, money, etc. Things would’ve continued normally like this but, one transfer student: Jabami Yumeko shook up the whole system of the school.
Kakegurui has a pretty interesting plot. The story and the stakes really elevate as things go on. When things get going, even you can feel the madness of gambling; that is how intense this series can be at times. This is definitely one of the better NGNL-style mangas that I’ve seen. Definitely my favorite among them though.
Characters
Kakegurui has a lot of strong characters. Almost every important character will leave an impression on you and all of them are really memorable because of it. Starting off with Yumekop herself, she’s just crazy. Her observation ability and the way she provokes people are really satisfying. Then there are others like Mary, Kirari, Manyuda, etc. The only normal person here is Suzui and even then he’s a pretty good character.
Art
The art is intense as you might expect and I really like that. If you look at some volume covers and stuff, I really love the usage of black in those. And this amazing usage of black tones continues in the manga and it does a great job of emphasizing scenes and adding more dramatic value to them.
Why should you read Kakegurui?
Quick pointers on why you should check out this manga:
- Good plot
- Memorable characters
- Awesome art
Conclusion
That is all for now. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. Kakegurui is a really entertaining series and it deserves more love than it gets in my opinion. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!
