Mappa is literally the name on the tongues of a lot of people. Of course, they weren’t always this popular. They did have some old hits but nothing was crazy enough to put Mappa on everyone’s map. So what happened over the years?
The short answer to that question would be that a lot of things happened and a lot of hard work was involved. But we are here to explore the long answer here today. I will take examples of Mappa’s major projects to try to explain their growth.
Also Mappa, hats off to you guys. You are amazing and keep up the good work. So let’s get started now
Sakamichi no Apollo or Kids on the Slopes was Mappa’s first project and a really good anime. I strongly recommend it. it was the adaptation of the manga of the same name. it is a really good anime but didn’t get much mainstream success despite having Cowboy Bebop’s director and composer. It is a shame, people don’t know what they’re missing.
This brought Mappa to the international market. It about 2 kids terrorizing Tokyo for reasons. It has a really good story and the art is very good as well. it is just 11 episodes but Nine and Twelve’s characters are done really well including their backstories. It did get some mainstream success but still wasn’t enough to leave Mappa’s mark.
Yuri on Ice is one of the most beloved anime series of all time and Mappa’s first mainstream success. I don’t even need to explain how famous Yuri on Ice is and its opening is. I haven’t watched Yuri on Ice and a still know so much about it.it was with this anime that people started to actually notice Mappa.
Dororo and Banana Fish
Mappa started receiving more attention with these as studios are generally reluctant to animate old mangas. But Mappa still did it and let me tell you, Dororo is really good.
Until now, these were all just small steps. They did a few major projects but they didn’t become crazy popular or anything but….
AoT and Jujutsu Kaisen
It is with these anime that Mappa blew up in popularity. Maybe it is because of how well they were able to handle 2 major anime without sacrificing the quality of either of them. No studio was willing to take Aot as many major studios were working on other projects and some were afraid to shoulder all the expectations that came with AoT.
Mappa stepped up to the plate and delivered way more than we could have asked for. At the same time, they were also working on Jujutsu Kaisen but it didn’t affect the end result of either anime.
Chainsaw Man latest major project of Mappa
This is another anime that will become really famous and more people will read the manga because of the anime. I get it, it is not suitable for everyone since it has a lot of graphic scenes but Chainsaw Man is really good so try to watch it. I am really looking forward to it.
Well, those were my observations on Mappa’s popularity based on their major projects. Let me know your thoughts down in the comments. As always, stay tuned for more content, and do not forget to check our art section. With that said, I will take my leave here. See ya!!
