This anime mainly caught my interest because of its unique-looking plot. The plot seems like a remarkable variation on the typical hero’s journey troupe. Not only that but Frieren Beyond Journey’s End is also being made by an interesting studio.
All this led me to believe that this anime could be really good. It is coming out in a pretty busy season though so I don’t know how much attention will this get. That is beside the point right now. So let’s get started with the article.
Welcome back to another edition of Put This on Your Radar – the series where we take a look at upcoming anime that caught my eye. Today we are talking about Frieren Beyond Journey’s End. So let’s get started.
What do we know about Frieren Beyond Journey’s End?
The anime is based on the manga of the same name by Yamada Kanehito and Abe Tsukasa. The manga has been serialized in Shounen Sunday magazine since April 2020. It is about the titular character, Frieren.
Frieren is an elf who was once part of the party that defeated the demon kind. But since elves live longer, over the years, she saw all her friends eventually die. One of her late friends has an apprentice called Fern. Soon, Fern and Frieren set on an aimless journey, collecting spells and revisiting places Frieren once visited with her late friends.
Frieren Beyond Journey’s End will be made by Madhouse, It will be directed by Saitou Keiichirou, who has worked on stuff like Bocchi, Oshi no Ko, Ascendance of a Bookworm, etc. Tanezaki Atsumi will be starring as Frieren. And lastly, the anime is scheduled to come out in the Fall 2023 season. You can check out the latest PV for it right here.
What do I think?
As I said, I am quite impressed with the synopsis of this series. I think it is an interesting take on your usual hero’s journey based fantasy animes. You know, because almost none of them deal with the aftermath of the defeat of the Big Evil. This story can really show what happened after the Demon Kind was defeated and that gives us an interesting perspective on the world-building as we should be able to see the ‘before’ and ‘after’ of the places they visit.
