So I had heard a lot of good things about this manga but, I wasn’t able to check it out for some reason or another. Now finally, I was able to check out Dorohedoro, and boy it was a ride. I love this manga. Every ounce of praise I heard for it was well-placed and true. It is not something that will resonate with everyone but if you like dark and gritty stuff, this is the manga for you.
Welcome back to another edition of our manga recommendation series. This week we are talking about Dorohedoro. It is a truly unique dark comedy manga that I finished recently. So let’s get started right away.
Introduction
Dorohedoro is written and illustrated by Hayashida Q. It was serialized in the Gessan magazine from 30th November 2000 to 12th September 2018. The manga is 23 volumes or 190 chapters. It is the 54th highest-rated manga on MAL, which is pretty crazy. Mappa also made an anime adaptation of this, that aired in the winter season of 2020. I haven’t watched the anime, so I won’t comment on it.
Dorohedoro is one of the most creative and well-presented stories I have seen. The comedy placed in the series is very genius as it serves to distract you from the amount of gore it has. The balance between seriousness and comedy is a key point in a series like this. And this manga handles this balance exceptionally well.
Plot.
Dorohedoro takes place in the “Hole”. A place where no laws and rules stand. This place is viewed by magic users as a place for experimentation and they see the residents as little more than vermin. The story follows Caiman, a humanoid creature with reptilian features who is immune to magic. See as Caiman fulfills his objectives and agendas in this dark, twisted place.
Dorohedoro is really well written and presented. The comedy parts do a great job of distracting you from all the gore; there is a lot of gore in the series. The story is also really well-paced and full of unexpected stuff. World writing is some of the most creative writing I’ve seen in a long while.
Characters
Dorohedoro has a fair bit of characters. Almost all of the characters are really well written and each character has their purpose. Caiman is one of the few people to have the ability to freely enter/exit the Hole. He uses this ability and his immunity to magic as a way to pursue his own goals. He is a really good MC. I love the fact that he can get hungry almost any time and he has some of the best reactions towards it as well.
Art
Dorohedoro has a very unique art style. Everything looks very disgusting in the series and it is meant to look that way. Everything is dark and gritty. As for the art itself, it is really awesome as well. The scenes are really pretty to look at, often disgusting but pretty regardless. I really love the way this manga looks man, it looks so raw.
Why should you read Dorohedoro?
Quick pointers on why you should check out this anime:
