After having something really wholesome for the manga recommendation, I thought why not have some emotional damage for the anime recommendation this week? And that is why I picked Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Those of you who have watched the series, know exactly what I mean, And if you haven’t watched the series yet, let’s try to convince you to watch it today.
So welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series. Today will be a fun one. Because today we talk about Cyberpunk Edgerunners. So let’s get started.
Introduction
As the name suggests, Edgerunners is indeed based on the famous game, Cyberpunk 2077. After the disastrous launch, this anime played a huge part in the resurgence of the game. The story of the anime kind of acts like a prequel to the story of the game. So you can watch the anime no sweat, even if you know nothing about the game. The anime is made by Trigger Studios and is just 10 episodes long.
Plot
The story of this anime is pretty simple on the surface. Our MC, David is a school student who hopes of joining the prestigious Arasaka corporation and making his mother proud. One day, he has a run-in with a gang. He picks up an implant that gives him super speed and uses it to take revenge on the said gang. This action causes him to be expelled from the academy, shattering his dreams. A data thief called Lucy finds him and recruits him into the Edgerunners – a group of Cyborg criminals.
The plot is incredibly well-paced. The twists are always unexpected and keep you on the edge every time. After a certain point, you always fear for the safety of the characters. All of this coupled with the awesome world-building of Cyberpunk and some great characters makes this show really memorable. So yeah, the plot alone is enough to make this anime good. But
Characters
See I told you earlier that after a point, you fear for the safety of the character every moment. That reflects 2 things: The tension of the plot and the quality of the characters. You will only fear for the characters if you care about them. And this anime does an incredible job of making us not only familiar with the characters but also making us relate to them in some way. Hence, you don’t want anyone to die, which adds to the tension of the anime. David’s character arc throughout the series was just awesome. My guy goes from a wimp to a true Chad, I love his character so much.
Animations
You know how Trigger works. They did a fantastic job of capturing the Night City in an anime art style. The animations are fluid and really good-looking. The character designs are incredible too.
