- If you’re a fan of great characters, awesome art, and amazing fights, Baki the Grappler is a must-read.
Fighting mangas are something very difficult to get right, After all, the main draw of the plot and everything else, are the fights. People come to the manga to see the fights. So there can’t be too much padding between fights otherwise it’d take away from the hype of the fights.
Baki the Grappler though, is a fighting manga that somehow gets this balance right. Yes, the plot may be simplistic but the character writing makes up for it. And of course, the fights are awesome.
So welcome back to another edition of our manga recommendation series, today we will talk about Baki the Grappler, Baki Hanma, or Baki-dou, whatever name you prefer. The names are a bit confusing, I’ll explain the reason behind it in a sec. This manga is a blast to read. So let’s get started.
Introduction
Baki the Grappler is written and illustrated by Keisuke Itagaki. The original manga, Baki was serialized in Weekly Shonen Champion Magazine from 1991 to 1996. That is not all though, 4 sequel mangas: Baki (yes, another one), Baki Hanma, Baki-dou, and Bakidou were serialized in the same magazine. With the 5th installment still ongoing.
Netflix has been adapting these into anime and they’re pretty good from what I’ve heard.
Plot
As I said, this is a fighting manga. What does that mean? Well, everything in the plot is related to fighting. Baki is raised by a wealthy mother who wants him to train and surpass his father as a warrior. Baki does that but is beaten pretty easily by his father who then kills his mother when she tries to save him.
This of course makes Baki hate his father and to grow stronger, he joins an underground fighting ring. That is pretty much all you need to know about the plot. You can just jump into the manga now and start enjoying the fights. It is that simple.
Characters
Baki The Grappler has some amazing characters. It does a great job of portraying these larger-than-life personas and egos. Baki’s character development throughout the manga has been amazing. His character development really skyrockets after losing to his father. The cast of side characters is really memorable too.
Art
The art looks amazing. Baki has this really intense and gritty art style. It reflects the serious tone of the plot really well. The fights look amazing and the character designs are pretty cool too.
