Now’s a good time as any to revisit this masterpiece right? Man, I still have such fond memories of this anime. Mieruko-chan has such a good balance between some good ol’ fun and serious/chilling moments. It is a very good horror slice-of-life anime… if that makes sense. I found it thanks to Muse Asia, otherwise, I probably would’ve missed it I guess?
But well, welcome back to another edition of our anime recommendation series! This week we are talking about Mieruko-chan. It is an anime I am very fond of and love to talk about so well, let’s get started.
Introduction
Mieruko-chan anime is based on the manga of the same name by Izumi Tomoki. The manga started its serialization in Web Comic Apanta on 2nd November 2018. and is still ongoing. Its anime was made by Passione studio and aired in the fall 2021 season. You can watch all 12 episodes of Mieruko-chan for free thanks to Muse Asia.
Mieruko-chan found a very good sweet spot between horror and comedy that only a few stories manage so well. More often than not such stories end up being way too serious and this makes them unintentionally funny. A good example of this is Another. Mieruko-chan does a great job of maintaining this sensitive balance.
Plot
Mieruko-chan is about Yotsuya Miko, a normal high-school girl who suddenly starts seeing weird ghosts everywhere one day. Miko realizes that not everyone can see them and hence, decides the best way to deal with them is to simply ignore them. The story sees Miko going through her everyday life trying her best to ignore the creepy ghosts and saving her friends once in a while from the creeps.
That is as simple as Mieruko-chan’s plot gets. It is this simplicity that allows it to build some really good characters and character interactions. The plot is rather well-paced and there are quite a few little twists despite the series being rather episodic. It is a simple plot that works really well for what the anime is trying to achieve.
Characters
This is where the actual juice of the series comes down to. The characters and the interactions between them are what make Mieruko-chan fun to watch. There aren’t a lot of characters in the series, it is generally just Miko and her 2 friends but the relationship between them is so well developed. I love how Hana is completely clueless while Miko is often trying desperately to save her. Their dynamic and interactions really add a layer of fun to the series.
Animations and Soundtracks
Passione did a fairly good job of animating Mieruko-chan. The art style is very colorful and stands out a lot. It is very attention-drawing and I really like it. The animations are pretty ok and work well for the setting of the series. As for the soundtracks, the BGM is really intense at times and I just love the opening and ending themes of the series. They are so catchy and fun to listen to.
Why should you watch Mieruko-chan?
Some quick pointers on why you should check out this anime:
- Really fun
- Simple plot
- Great characters
- Rather short
Conclusion
That is all for now. Let me know what you think in the comments. Mieruko-chan is a genuinely fun anime and I love it. It’s worth rewatching even if you have watched the series already. With that said though, I will take my leave here. See ya!!
